The Miracle of the Buttermilk Biscuits and Fishes - Fan Fiction

Fan Fiction by Donald L. Hughes from John 6:1-14

Two boys led lives worlds apart in a bustling town split by a river. On the wealthy side of town, there lived a boy named Jonathan. With his neatly combed hair and sandals polished to a shine, Jonathan was known for his cheerful disposition and love for fishing.

His father, a successful merchant, often took him down to the river to fish, and they reeled in the finest catches from the sparkling river. Jonathan loved to fish with his father.

One early sunny morning, Jonathan went fishing by himself. He had a peculiar bounty: two of the plumpest, freshest fish he had ever caught. He could hardly wait to show his family. But he had a different idea. Perhaps he could give them to a poor family across the river.

Samuel lived across the river in a cozy little home that always smelled of warm bread and spices. Samuel’s family was not rich in gold, but they were rich in love and laughter. Samuel’s mother was famous in their neighborhood for her buttermilk biscuits—fluffy, golden delights that could bring a smile to anyone’s face.

That same morning, she handed Samuel a small basket with five of these biscuits, fresh from the oven. “God has supplied our needs,” his mother said. “Give these to someone whose needs are greater than our own.”

As Jonathan went out the door, his mother called out. “Remember to keep the basket,” she reminded him.

Despite the river that divided their worlds, divine providence was in play. Word spread like wildfire that Jesus, the great teacher and healer, was coming to the outskirts of their town. People from all walks of life were gathering to hear his words of wisdom and witness his miracles. Jonathan and Samuel had heard about this teacher, and each, curious and excited, decided to make their way to the gathering.

Jonathan clutched his two fish tightly as he crossed the grand bridge connecting the town’s rich and poor sides. Samuel, with his basket of buttermilk biscuits, weaved through the narrow streets until he reached the bridge.

At the midpoint of the bridge, the two boys met for the first time. As boys often do, they exchanged curious glances and struck up an easy conversation.

“Where are you headed with those fish?” Samuel asked, eyeing Jonathan’s catch.

“Just caught them. I  was going to give them away to a hungry person, but I’m curious to see Jesus,” Jonathan replied with a grin. “What about you and those sweet-smelling buttermilk biscuits?”

“My mom made them, and they’re the best in town,” Samuel said, his eyes twinkling.

They walked together, sharing stories and laughing, until they reached the hillside where a crowd of thousands had already gathered. The air buzzed with anticipation and the sound of murmuring voices.

Jonathan and Samuel found a spot near the front, their eyes wide with wonder as they saw Jesus standing before the multitude, his presence radiating kindness and serenity. As Jesus spoke, his words touched the hearts of everyone present.

The day wore on, and it became clear that the people were growing hungry. His disciples looked concerned, wondering how they could possibly feed such a vast crowd. It was then that Jesus, with a gentle smile, turned his gaze towards Jonathan and Samuel.

“Come here, my young friends,” Jesus called, his voice warm and inviting. The boys exchanged excited glances and made their way to Jesus, clutching their humble offerings.

“What do you have there?” Jesus asked kindly.

Jonathan held up his two fish. “These are the best I’ve ever caught,” he said proudly.

“And these are my mom’s famous buttermilk biscuits,” Samuel added, presenting his basket.

Jesus’ eyes twinkled with delight. “Thank you both for your generosity,” he said. He then lifted the fish and the buttermilk biscuits towards the heavens, offering a prayer of thanksgiving.

The boys watched in awe as Jesus began to break the fish and biscuits into pieces, handing them to his disciples to distribute among the crowd. To their amazement, the food never seemed to run out. Basket after basket was filled, and every person present could eat their fill.

The two boys could hardly believe their eyes as their simple gifts multiplied to feed thousands.

When everyone had eaten, there were even twelve baskets of leftovers. Jonathan and Samuel felt a sense of joy and fulfillment, unlike anything they had ever experienced. Jesus placed a hand on each of their shoulders and said, “Never underestimate the power of a small gift given with a big heart. You have shown great faith today.”

Both boys beamed.

“I’m glad so many enjoyed my fish,” said Jonathan.

“I’m happy all these people got to taste my mom’s buttermilk biscuits,” said Samuel. “But my mom needs her basket back.”

As the crowd dispersed, Jonathan and Samuel knew their lives would never be the same. They had witnessed a miracle and played a part in it. They returned home, their hearts light and their spirits uplifted, forever bonded by the extraordinary adventure they had shared.

Jonathan and Samuel remained friends from that day forward, often reflecting on that miraculous day. Together, they became disciples of Jesus Christ, King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

They learned that no matter where they came from or how little they had, their gifts could make a big difference when given with faith in Jesus Christ and with his love. They spread the message of hope, generosity, and the boundless miracles that can arise from even the simplest acts of kindness for the rest of their lives.
